ROILO GOLEZ, THE UNDEFEATED ANNAPOLIS BOXING CHAMPION:

Roilo Golez became a four-time undefeated Brigade Boxing Champion at Annapolis by winning in four hard fought, slam bang boxing championships which showed not only his skills, but his guts and mental toughness.

In his first championship, Golez was the underdog against an Irish American Norm Carley, known for his aggressive, bruising slugger style. In a historic fight with no less than former undefeated heavyweight boxing champion Rocky Marciano as referee, Golez and Carley fought a toe to toe slugfest. Golez surprised Carley with his aggressive style and won a unanimous decision.

His second championship was equally exciting. He met African American senior midshipman Charles Bolden in another classic slugfest. At this time, Golez already established a reputation for his almost unstoppable combination of left jab, followed by a left hook that became his trademark throughout his Academy boxing career. Golez won this fight by unanimous decision. Charles Bolden joined the U.S. Marine Corps after graduation, became a fighter pilot, then later became a Space Shuttle Astronaut. He retired as a U.S. Marine Corps Major General.
Golez third championship was against a tough Polish American Tom Bjerke. As usual, Golez fought aggressively against an equally aggressive boxer and won handily.

His fourth and final fight was again against Tom Bjerke. But before the semi-finals against James Searing, Golez had the scare of his life when all of a sudden he had to be sent to sick bay a few days before the fight because of flu and high fever. Everybody thought he was finished and that the four championship jinx was at work again. Prior to Golez, there were several boxers who made it three championships in a row but somehow lost in their fourth championship, some by what some people thought were freak losses, and people thought there was a jinx. But Golez showed his mental determination, quickly recovered and although in poor condition because of the recent bout with flu, went on to win the semi-finals and then the finals against tough slugger Tom Bjerke to become the first Annapolis midshipman in Naval Academy history to win four Brigade Boxing Championships.
